The City of Olympia named Tim Smith as the new Director of Community Planning and Economic Development.
City Manager Jay Burney announced the move. Smith replaces Susan McLaughlin, who resigned from the post.
In a memo sent to city staff, Burney said Smith’s promotion is “well supported and respected as a leader” by him, the department and the executive team.
“He will do an amazing job as the director moving forward,” stated Burney, as he thanked Smith for stepping into the new assignment.
Smith had previously served as the CPED's interim director for 11 months following Leonard Bauer’s retirement in 2024.
McLaughlin was appointed CPED director in March 2025 and served in the role for 10 months.
