Previously, the county cautioned residents to stay away from the lake after high levels of microcystin, a type of liver toxin, was found in the waterbody. Officials even noted that the microcystin level was at twice the recommended amount.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Microcystin is considered as a possible human carcinogen. Exposure to this type of algae bloom may vary from mild rashes to kidney failure and in some instances, may also lead to death.
