TRPC hosts online surveys on the Hazards Mitigation Plan; invites community members to participate

The Thurston Regional Planning Council is seeking input and ideas from community members regarding regional natural disaster planning by participating in an online survey.

According to Paul Brewster, senior planner at TRPC, the survey centers around identifying actions local communities should take to reduce the risks of wildfires, earthquakes, floods, and others.

Local governments in Thurston County, including municipalities, special purpose districts, and colleges, are partnering with TRPC in updating the Hazards Mitigation Plan, which aims to minimize the impacts of natural disasters.

The Hazards Mitigation Plan identified nine hazards that threaten the region. These include dam failure, earthquakes, floods, landslides, sea level rise, severe weather, tsunamis, volcanic lahar, and wildfires.

Plan partners identified actions to mitigate the destructive impacts of hazards in the communities.

The proposed actions involved the following:

  • conducting studies to understand the risks
  • strengthening communication and relationships among key partners
  • enhancing technical capabilities through programs
  • developing specific emergency response plans, and implementing projects to safeguard critical infrastructure and valuable assets

Twelve proposed measures have been developed for regional mitigation actions. More than 100 actions tailored to each partner community's specific needs and risks were also identified. The jurisdiction-specific activities are presented in their surveys.

TRPC is hosting an open house and survey to gather insights and ideas from the community. Community members are encouraged to contribute their input on the proposed actions.

The survey runs until August 25 and includes eight questions on risk reduction priorities and demographic information. Each partner presents community-specific mitigation actions using the same format and questions.

Participants are encouraged to take the relevant community survey based on their residence, workplace, or received services.
