TRPC seeks public input on Martin Way crosswalk designs by May 31

Posted

Residents and business owners have until Saturday, May 31, to share their input on the future of crosswalks along Martin Way through an online survey launched by the Thurston Regional Planning Council (TRPC).

The community feedback will help guide the final design for 10 priority crosswalk locations identified to improve pedestrian safety along the busy corridor.

The Martin Way Crossing Strategy — a collaborative effort between TRPC, the cities of Olympia and Lacey, Thurston County and Intercity Transit — started in June 2024.

The project now moves into the design phase. The project team is inviting the public to share their preferences for these proposed crosswalk improvements.

The survey, which has 30 questions, takes about 20 minutes to complete and allows participants to comment on any or all of the 10 locations identified for new crosswalks.

The sites span from west to east along Martin Way and were selected based on crash data, pedestrian activity, nearby bus stop usage, population density and environmental health disparities.

Crosswalk locations

In Olympia, the proposed crosswalk locations include:

  • Devoe Street. It is near the Holly Motel and bus stops that are highly used. There was a serious or fatal pedestrian collision recorded in the last 10 years.
  • The Bark Store. Located across from Joint Animal Services. There was at least one fatal or serious injury collision in the last 10 years. This site has strong community support for crosswalks, according to the TRPC's December 2024 survey.
  • 4500 Martin Way serves a mobile home community and has busy bus stops across from Capital Christian Center and Red Lobster. The location was one of the most prioritized for crosswalks.

In unincorporated Thurston County (Lacey Urban Growth Area), the proposed locations are:

  • Between Carpenter Road and Kinwood Street. A commercial area with moderate population density. Multiple crashes have occurred in this area in the last 10 years.
  • Thurston County Food Bank is located between Neil Street and Ranger Drive. At least one fatal or serious injury collision near the food bank was reported in the last 10 years.
  • School Street is across from Winco. It has a high population density. Multiple crashes have occurred near School Street in the last 10 years.
  • 7838 Martin Way. It is the entrance to the mobile home community. The area has a high population density. Within the past decade, there has been at least one collision reported.

The four sites rank high on Washington's Environmental Health Disparities Map, indicating potential environmental health concerns.

In Lacey, the proposed crosswalks include:

  • Gerald Street between Marvin Road and Hoh Street, across from Costco. It has a high population density and has seen multiple crashes in the last 10 years. Many community members, through TRPC's December 2024 survey, identified this site as a priority location for crosswalks.
  • Blackhawk Lane is between Hoh Street and River Ridge Drive, near multiple shops. Multiple crashes were recorded in the area in the last 10 years.
  • Copper Wood Lane is located between River Ridge Drive and Meridian Road/Duterrow Road. It has a high population density. The site was also identified in TRPC's survey that should be prioritized to have a crosswalk.

TPRC encourages everyone who lives, works or travels along Martin Way to participate. The survey is open through Saturday, May 31. The survey is available online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6WC5VMJ
