Tumwater City Council passes resolution affirming its commitment to civil rights

The Tumwater City Council voted to pass a resolution on Tuesday, Dec. 3, providing a policy statement that affirms the council’s “commitment to equality, dignity, and protection of civil rights,” as well as its “standing against hate, bigotry, and discrimination.”

Communications Manager Jason Wettstein told the council that the resolution would be “highly supportive” of the ongoing work to establish an equity commission in 2025.

The city has initiated various efforts in anticipation of the work ahead, such as public outreach activities, participating in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives, and researching models for an equity commission.

“All of this is in anticipation of continuing to work to assess staff and financial resources and structural bases needed to create an equity commission in 2025,” Wettstein explained.

He added that the resolution is a “statement of values,” while recognizing past actions and the work that is being done.

“This provides a foundation for more action and context to our work so far,” Wettstein said.

The resolution is mainly two sections, with the first listing the council’s commitments.

The first section mentions fostering a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and belonging, supporting law enforcement to address hate crimes and civil rights violations, and committing to educational and outreach efforts to promote awareness of civil rights and the harmful impacts of discrimination.

The second section emphasizes the council’s commitment to action. It also acknowledges that the city has begun the work for the equity commission, and that it would continue working with the communities affected by discrimination.

The resolution was originally drafted and modified by members of the city’s Public Health and Safety Committee.
