River or tower?

Tumwater mulls new city logo designs

Posted

Tumwater city staff presented new logo designs to the general government committee for discussion yesterday, October 12.

City communications manager Ann Cook presented several logo concepts. Committee members did not approve any design but deliberated the most on a design showing Tumwater’s brew tower along the river. Committee members suggested de-emphasizing the tower and highlighting the river.

“I just simply don't like the idea that our logo is all about the brew tower,” said council member Joan Cathey. “I don't think of that when I think of the Tumwater. I think more of nature… Tumwater is not a building town.”

Council member Michael Althauser added, “If we didn't have that river there, there would be no brew tower. I think [I] like the prominence of the river because the river is why a lot of those things happened.

“But I still think the brew tower is important,” Althausaer clarified, “because I think that sort of symbolizes some of the future that we're hoping to craft.”

The current logo was adopted in the mid-1980s and features an image that is historic in its style and has a narrow interpretation of the culture and history of the city’s present community, according to a document prepared by city staff for the meeting.

“When we talk about the future of our organization, and where we want to be and where we're going, the image doesn't quite match the story,” said city administrator John Doan. “It served the city well for a period of time. Now we're in a new space and a new time, and we need to move forward a particular way.”

Finalizing the artwork for the new logo will cost under $5,000, according to documents prepared by city staff. More logo concepts will be presented at a city council work session on November 7.

A brewery that was up for sale and Tumwater was too greedy to accept a multimillion dollar offer? Pretty typical of Tumwater. Now they want the brewery to reflect Tumwater? Huh.

Tumwater's logo should be a roundabout. That's what they're putting in all over the darned area. A roundabout more accurately reflects what Tumwater is: South Fife. Warehouses and trucks.

The brewery was up for sale years ago and Tumwater was too greedy to accept a multimillion dollar offer for it. Now it's a derelict haven for homeless guys and vandals. That's the image? pffft. But that's typical of Tumwater's city staff-a distinct inability to accept reality.

If they truly want a logo that accurately reflects what Tumwater is,the only choice is a roundabout. The city staff LOVES roundabouts, just look at the triple monster they have planned for Trosper/Capitol intersections. You can't count the number of roundabouts Tumwater's installed.

Nope, City Staff. The best logo for your boondoggle is a roundabout. Maybe even rename the city to "South Fife Home of Warehouses and Trucks".
