The Tumwater City Council authorized Mayor Debbie Sullivan to amend a contract with the Housing Authority of Thurston County to renovate Tumwater Inn and Suites.
The city council made the decision on Feb. 18.
Tumwater is under contract with the housing authority to convert the motel at 5895 Capital Boulevard SW into affordable housing for seniors.
The housing authority acquired the building in July 2024 with $7.9 million it received from the Rapid Capital Housing Acquisition (RCHA) program of the Washington State Department of Commerce.
"The RCHA program provides funding to acquire real property for rapid conversion into enhanced emergency shelters, permanent supportive housing, transitional housing, permanent housing, youth housing or shelter for people with extremely low incomes and people experiencing sheltered and unsheltered homelessness in Washington state," the department of commerce said.
The grant required a $275,000 match from the city to assist the motel's long-term occupants in relocating and ridding the property of asbestos, lead and mold.
The amendment focused on realigning matching funds as the relocation of the occupants has been completed, according to an update by Planning Manager Brad Medrud to the General Government Committee on Feb. 18.
The original contract earmarked $200,000 for relocation assistance but used less than $67,000. The amendment reallocates the remainder of the matching funds, around $208,000, for the motel cleanup.
Once fully renovated, the project will provide 24 units of affordable housing for seniors with incomes in the lower half of the local median.
