Tumwater School District (TSD) recognized students from local schools for participating and accomplishing several wins at a state music contest.

TSD thanked James Kois from Black Hills High School yesterday, May 25, after finishing as Bass Clarinet Solo State Champion last April during the State Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Along with Kois, Tumwater High School students Eli Denning and Ayden Ramsey were also hailed as Multiple Percussion Solo State Champion and Timpani Solo State Champion, respectively, and they will be awarded next meeting because of prior engagements.

The special recognition started with Kois playing his contest piece, Rhapsody by Willson Osborne.

“Thank you for representing Black Hills High School and for being a positive role model for young musicians in the district,” TSD President Scott Killough proclaimed.

Qualified contestants hailing from 22 regional elimination contests competed in this statewide competition where first, second, and third places were selected.

There were 29 solo categories: seven for woodwind, five for brass, four for percussion, four for strings, and six for vocal, piano, guitar, and harp.

This event is held annually every last Friday and Saturday in April, with solo contestants competing all day on Saturday.

The Washington Music Educators Association organized the competition, and the list of winners can be found on this site.
