The City of Tumwater is offering a free and safe way to dispose of old electronics, unused medications and sensitive documents at its "Clean-Up, Drop-Off" event on Saturday, Oct. 4.
Residents can drive through the parking lot at Tumwater City Hall from 9 a.m. to noon to drop off their items. Volunteers will be on hand to unload items directly from vehicles, so participants can remain in their cars, said the City of Tumwater in announcing the event.
Expired or unused prescriptions can be discarded at a drop box in the vestibule of the adjacent Tumwater Police Department building. Needles, syringes, lancets and other sharp objects will not be accepted.
For sensitive documents, LeMay Mobile will be on site with a shredding truck. People are asked to limit their documents to four grocery size bags or banker size boxes.
Hazardous waste will not be accepted, so the city recommends going to Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center at 2420 Hogum Bay Road in Lacey to properly dispose of chemicals and toxins for free.
The Thurston County Food Bank will be on hand to collect donations of nonperishable food items.
Volunteers are needed to help direct traffic, assist with shredding, unload donations and manage items for distribution to local organizations.
People looking to volunteer may register here or contact the city’s volunteer coordinator at (360) 754-4167.

Thank you City of Tumwater for this opportunity! But is it open only to Tumwater residents?
