Two men were arrested for discharging a firearm in a residential area on McNiece Drive SE in Yelm during a Fourth of July celebration, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a report of a shattered vehicle window on July 4. The investigation revealed bullets had been fired in a residential neighbourhood that shattered the window of a 2025 Dodge Durango.
No injuries were reported, but the gunfire caused damage to property and raised safety concerns among nearby residents.
Chad Adrian Riley, 48, of Yelm, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and three counts of reckless endangerment, a sheriff's office report shows.
During the investigation, deputies discovered that Riley is a convicted felon for second-degree child molestation and his right to possess firearms was not restored.
According to the witnesses, Riley fired several bullets during a fireworks display that resulted in damage to his neighbor’s vehicle. Riley talked to the vehicle’s owner and “made statements relating to sorry and being willing to pay for the damages and did not want law enforcement to be involved.”
Riley’s nephew, Cayden Ashton Hayes, 21, of Yelm was also arrested and charged with three counts of reckless endangerment, the report states. Hayes initially told deputies about discharging a 9mm handgun on the ground, but later admitted he had been aiming at water jugs.
Spent shell casings were found in the gravel driveway, and after executing a search warrant at the residence, deputies found unspent 9mm ammunition inside the house. Deputies were unable to locate the firearm used by the two men.
Both suspects were booked into Thurston County Corrections Facility.
