Update: Investigation continues into the shooting death of Michael Reinoehl

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating the shooting death of Michael Reinoehl for nearly four months. Now, they expect the investigation to be complete in the first few months of 2021.

On Sept. 3, Reinoehl was shot and killed by a U.S. Marshal-led task force in the Tanglewilde neighborhood near Lacey. Members of the task force say they were moving in to arrest Reinoehl, while witnesses say police gave little to no warning before opening fire.

Reinoehl was wanted in connection to the shooting death of Aaron Danielson, during a protest in Portland. Danielson was associated with a right-wing organization. Reinoehl stated in an interview with Vice that he killed Danielson in self defense.

No officers with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the shooting. The organization has sent out weekly press releases, updating the progress on the investigation; a majority of the releases duplicated information from previous weeks. The most recent one indicated the investigation would wrap up in the first couple months of 2021.

Reinoehl’s gun and a bullet casing found in his car were sent to the Washington State Patrol lab for analysis, and results are expected in one to two months.

“We do not anticipate to be completed with this investigation until after we have the information back from the Crime Lab and have an opportunity to review the information,” reads a press release from the sheriff’s office.

As The JOLT previously reported, while officers say Reinoehl pointed a handgun at them, an investigation by the New York Times found varying descriptions of the incident from witnesses in the Tanglewilde neighborhood.
