Oly Town FC clinched the lone playoff berth for the Northwest Division of the USL W League for the first time in club history after beating Lane United FC 4-0 in front of their faithful hometown supporters at the South Sound Stadium, Olympia, last Friday evening.
Chris Wells’s ladies have sat in first place for the majority of the season, which includes an undefeated record. All eyes were on a postseason opportunity with a win against Lane United to secure a spot for the USL W League National Playoff.
And they breezily did, in usual domineering fashion after two goals from Oly Town scoring machine McKenna Martinez, and individual goals from winger Mariah Lee and holding midfielder Kelsey Kwon booking the ticket for Oly Town’s first trip to a USL playoff, men or women, ever.
“I’m pumped and just so excited to go to the regional playoffs.” said Oly Town defender Abigail Jacobs in a postmatch interview. “This is such a quality team in a great program that [Oly Town principal owner] Ryan [Perkins] and everybody has put together.”
In their first home match after more than two weeks of away games, Oly Town, as per usual in the whole season, dominated their opposition as they were fearless in taking on their defenders while handing the high press at the Lane half while taking risky attacking opportunities, leading to their seventh win this season.
The first goal came in the 17th minute for Mariah Lee, who just celebrated her birthday last Friday, taking advantage of a dead ball situation in the box from an Alex Schoenstadt corner, finessing a tame shot past the Lane goalkeeper to make it 1-0 that early.
Thirty minutes into the match and it was already 2-0 for Oly Town after their patience in the build-up of play was rewarded with a goal from Martinez, receiving the ball from a wonderful Alex Schoenstadt after lots of passes were done in possession under a Lane United press to have a commanding lead before halftime.
The ladies in white continued to put up a show in front of a rowdy 400 in attendance in the South Sound Stadium as some of the team was rotated by head coach Chris Wells to keep the team fresh, and with that, the third goal came as Martinez scored her second after capitalizing on an error from the Lane United backline, leaving their goalkeeper Olivia Riddel surrounded to make it 3-0 at 65’ game set and match.
The cherry on top to guarantee Oly Town’s playoff ticket is the final goal coming from Kelsey Kwon chesting a throw-in and winning her marker in a one-on-one and finishing with a left-footed curler just outside the box to get it to top bins to which, while tipped by Riddel, still found its way to the back of the net.
Despite the assurance of playoff success for Oly Town, there is still one game to go for Chris Wells’s women as they face CFC Atletica at South Sound Stadium on July 2 at 4PM kickoff IN their final match of the Northwest Division regular season. If they win or at least produce a draw come Sunday, this will be the first squad in Oly Town FC’s history to complete an undefeated regular season (men’s or women’s, indoor and/or outdoor football).
