In an effort to ensure voter registration records remain accurate and up-to-date, the Thurston County Auditor’s Office Elections Division is reaching out to thousands of residents.
The elections division mailed out more than 13,000 letters last week asking people to verify their voter status and addresses.
“This effort goes beyond our standard voter registration maintenance,” said Thurston County Auditor Mary Hall in a statement that accompanied an announcement of the mailing initiative.
“We are committed to maintaining accurate voter rolls, and that requires continuous collaboration and direct engagement with voters.”
An estimated 13,543 voters who receive mail at a different address than their residence should receive a letter asking them to confirm both of their addresses.
“Additionally, an upcoming mailer will be sent to over 7,000 domestic and 193 international voters covered under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, along with 3,800 voters who will receive an email,” said the Auditor’s Office in the announcement.
“These mailing help ensure ballots and election materials reach voters at their correct addresses.”
Last year, the Auditor’s Office made nearly 45,000 voter record updates, including more than 15,000 cancellations. The office also updated more than 1,500 voter records using Electronic Registration Information Center data, which uses a data-matching system to compare voter registration and motor vehicle records across 25 other states to identify duplicate registrations.
“The Auditor’s Office employs multiple strategies to maintain the accuracy of voter rolls, including regular updates from the Office of the Secretary of State, the Social Security Administration, and the United States Postal Service’s National Change of Address Program,” the Auditor’s Office said.
“Additional data sources include state agencies such as Licensing, Health, Corrections, and the Office of the Administrator of the Courts. The office also removes deceased voters from the rolls using information from health department records, published obituaries, and notices from relatives.”
