Bike Rescue Project debuts in Thurston County

Posted

Intercity Transit and Thurston County Solid Waste launched the Bike Rescue Project on July 1, opening a daily bike donation site for residents to drop off used adult bicycles for repair and redistribution.

A donation container is located inside the recycling drop-off area at 2420 Hogum Bay Road NE in Lacey.

As announced by Intercity Transit, the site accepts bikes with 24-inch wheels or larger, and operates during the center’s regular hours from 7 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on weekends.

Bikes dropped off are transferred to Intercity Transit’s Walk N Roll program, where volunteers evaluate, repair and prepare them for distribution through the Pedal It Forward and Full Cycle programs.

According to Walk N Roll, the restored bikes are later donated back into the community through school events, safety programs, and outreach efforts targeting residents without access to reliable transportation.

The program excludes certain models, including bikes with wheels smaller than 24 inches, BMX types, single-speed units and full suspension frames, Intercity Transit said.

The program directs bikes it cannot accept to other reuse channels, including the Hope Bike Shop and Tacoma-area donation groups.

Walk N Roll’s programs also use donated bikes in hands-on classes, where students learn bicycle repair, safety checks and maintenance through real components and live demos.

The Walk N Roll team can be reached at walknroll@intercitytransit.com for inquiries about accepted bikes, drop-off access or volunteer participation.
