Wet weekend ahead for Thurston County

A series of atmospheric rivers should make for sopping wet days ahead, as the bands of rain make their way into Thurston County.

The National Weather Service Office in Seattle forecast calls for wind-driven precipitation throughout the weekend and into Monday, Dec. 8, when the rain is expected to intensify.

There is a 90 percent chance of rain on Saturday, Dec. 6, mainly before 3 p.m. The high should be near 52 degrees with a south, southwest wind of 10 to 13 miles per hour (mph) and gusts up to 21 mph.

The overnight low should be around 44 degrees with a south wind of 7 mph. There is a 80 percent chance of precipitation.

The forecast is similar on Sunday, Dec. 7, with a 100 percent chance of rain, a high near 53 degrees and a south wind of 10 to 13 mph. Wind gusts could be as high as 22 mph. New precipitation amounts should be between one-quarter inch and one-half inch.

The overnight low should be around 46 degrees with an 80 percent chance of rain. New precipitation amounts should be between one-quarter and one-half inch.

There is a 100 percent chance of precipitation on Monday. The rain could be heavy at times. The high should be near 56 degrees.

The atmospheric rivers should also deliver a fair amount of fresh powder to mountain areas.

“Snow levels will fluctuate around 4,500 to 6,500 feet. Expect rising rivers with potential for flooding especially for rivers flowing off the Olympics and Cascades,” said the National Weather Service Office a hydrologic outlook on Friday, Dec. 5.

“Urban flooding and landslides are also possible throughout this period as soil conditions remain wet.

Rain is in the forecast through Thursday, Dec. 11. The forecast is subject to change.
