Get a chance to win prize money, including a $1,000 VISA gift card, by taking Olympia's survey on discrimination assessment.

The online survey went live on June 14 and will be available for a month and would take three to 12 minutes to complete

Community members who participate in the survey will be placed in a raffle for a $1,000 VISA gift card and other cash prizes.

The survey was prepared by Truclusion, which was commissioned by Olympia's Social Justice and Equity Commission, to get more information and data that they could use to develop an anti-discrimination program for implementation.

The survey is a part of the collection data process, including individual and focus group interviews, Truclusion Senior Manager Dane Wolfrom said at the recent Social Justice and Equity Commission meeting.

Participants in the interview who fully complete the survey will be compensated with a gift card.

Wolfrom said they wanted to indicate that the survey came from a third party to emphasize that people, especially marginalized groups, are safe to participate. "None of the personal information will go to the city from us. We keep it secure."

For the survey, Wolfrom added that they would use tools such as the Major Experiences of Discrimination (MED) and Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) to measure the frequency and impact of individuals' encounters with discrimination.

He explained that MED measures impactful instances of discrimination individuals may have encountered. It may include employment, housing, education, or law enforcement discrimination.

The EDS assesses frequent experiences of discrimination. It may include day-to-day instances, like mistreatment or receiving poorer services than others.

Wolfrom also encouraged participation from people who do not experience discrimination to complete the survey. "This is an important piece. We want good data about who does and doesn't experience these things."

The survey is available in four languages – English, Vietnamese, Spanish, and Korean.

You did not allow for comment in your survey. It seems obvious the answers you want, as the questions are slanted in that direction. Any survey can be set up that way.

I think if you would focus on actual discrimination rather than feelings then you could make some headway.

Was I stopped by the police? Yes, cause I did dumb things.

Was I denied service or given poor service? Yes, cause at times I was not a good customer.

The only response allowed by your survey to those questions is that I was discriminated against.

Don’t add to the problem, identify it and it can get corrected, even if the problem is within us.
