Women volunteers build homes at Tâlíčn development in Tumwater

Posted

Women volunteers are helping to build several homes at the Tâlíčn, a 28-home affordable housing development in Tumwater by South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity.

The volunteer event is part of Habitat for Humanity’s two-week fundraiser that runs through Saturday, May 9, before resuming May 13-16.

Volunteers will move to Yelm on the final day to lend a hand at the Mill Crossing, another development by Habitat for Humanity.

Over the course of the event, volunteers are framing the first-floor walls of four homes and second-floor walls of two others. Volunteers are also working on the subfloor, sheathing and other framing elements.

“Volunteers power our home construction, and Women Build is a huge boost. Having 16 to 32 volunteers on site each day means we can make a lot of progress during the event,” stated Habitat for Humanity in an email.

Volunteers are also working to raise funds on their own network. The event has so far raised more than $100,000 as of Friday morning with a target of $140,000.

Local companies, such as Peak Credit Union, Olympia Federal Savings, Navigate Financial, Harbor Foods, Forma Construction and Swire Coca-Cola, are among the major sponsors. Several restaurants are also donating lunch to volunteers.

“Last year, Women Build volunteers and sponsors raised over $100,000 to support affordable homeownership,” said Elizabeth Walker, CEO of South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity, in a statement. “This year, with experienced volunteer fundraisers, we think participants will raise even more to support our mission.”

The Tâlíčn development currently has 14 finished homes, which are now occupied by homeowners. Habitat for Humanity aims to complete 14 more this year.

People interested in volunteering to build homes during the remaining days of the event can email advancement@spshabitat.org with a message to indicate the day they want to participate.

Experience is not necessary, as seasoned colleagues will support volunteers new to construction. People looking to sponsor may also contact Habitat for Humanity at the same email.
