On Friday, March 25th, youth from high schools and middle schools throughout Thurston county will be gathering at Heritage Park on Capitol Lake for a Youth Climate Strike as part of a global day of action.
Youth climate strikes have become a defining characteristic of the global movement for climate justice. Youth of Thurston County have been an active part of the growing movement for climate justice from holding strikes, to delivering powerful testimony in support of the Thurston Climate Mitigation Plan (TCMP) to issuing a Climate Report Card for the Olympia City Council with a list of demands for urgent action on climate change at the local level.
This global day of action comes following the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report which emphasizes that the policy window to address the climate crisis is rapidly closing, and suggests a focus on adaptation as communities begin dealing with the consequences of the lack of emissions reductions. Here in Thurston County, we are already seeing the impacts of climate change events like the heat dome last summer, the flooding experienced this fall and winter, and worsening winter storms. Because of these constant reminders of the threat to their future, youth in our community are taking action.
