Alleged barcode-switching schemer arrested

Posted

A woman allegedly attempted to shoplift nearly $400 in merchandise by scanning false barcodes at the self-check-out register to avoid paying the actual price on Friday, June 25 at 2:40 p.m.

Teresa Renee Settle, 57, of Shelton, caught the attention of Walmart’s asset protection staff at the  Galaxy Dr. NE store after an employee noticed that her merchandise wasn’t ringing up as the correct item or at the correct price.

Out of the 30 items that Settle scanned, only six items rang up at the correct item or price. The value of the 24 wrongly scanned items amounted to $371.55, according to Walmart's asset protection staff.

It was later discovered by Walmart staff that Settle had allegedly removed multiple barcodes from different items throughout the store, using them in the scanning process. When confronted by Walmart asset protection, Settle did not cooperate and fled the property.

Lacey police were dispatched to Walmart and advised that Settle got into a blue Chevy Trailblazer. Based on the description, police located across the street from the store and initiated a traffic stop.

When asked by LPD if Settle knew why she was being stopped, Settle handed over the Walmart receipt and told LPD “I didn’t take anything.”

Settle was booked into the Nisqually jail for theft.
