An Olympia man was arrested after allegedly beating his girlfriend with an aluminum I-beam level last Thursday.

James McGreevey, 50, was arrested May 6 after hitting his common-law wife with the level and fleeing by car from his 1600 block Fones Road address to almost a mile away at the intersection of Fones Road and 6th Avenue.

McGreevey had been drinking and smoking cannabis earlier that night when McGreevey allegedly told his common-law wife that “your mother deserved to die the way she did.” The argument escalated until McGreevy slammed the level down on her head, then got on top of her, crushing her while pushing the level down across her neck, restricting her breathing.

McGreevey’s alleged victim pulled out a clump of his hair, managed to get away and locked herself in the bathroom while calling 911.

McGreevey allegedly threatened to go to New Jersey and kill her entire family.

Although the police report states that McGreevy’s speech was slurred and an odor of liquor could be smelled from his breath as he spoke, a DUI investigation was not moved forward due to an officer’s concern that McGreevy would attempt to flee law enforcement during a field-sobriety test.

When McGreevey was arrested, the arresting Olympia police officer told McGreevey, “You`re under arrest for Assault DV, I`m not sure of which level. No pun intended." McGreevey laughed at that statement. “The fact that he laughed at my statement indicates that he had knowledge that a level was involved in the assault,” according to the officer in his statement.

McGreevey was booked into the Thurston County Jail for felony assault.

Update: This story was updated June 15, 2021 to remove implications that McGreevey's wife had been consuming alcohol or cannabis.
