An allegedly intoxicated man was reportedly found asleep at the wheel by an off-duty Olympia police officer with his car running and his foot on the brake, on Tuesday, July 6, just after 1 a.m.

Louis Brackett, 47, of Chehalis, was found in his silver Range Rover “leaned back against his seat and his head was tilted to the right,” according to the officer.  Brackett later admitted to smoking marijuana and injecting methamphetamine. Brackett also told Olympia police that he had previously that night been woken up by Lakewood police 19 miles away where he was sleeping in his car.

Olympia police observed Brackett at the intersection of Henderson Blvd SE and Plum St SE, right off of the I-5 off-ramp to downtown Olympia, Brackett’s foot was on the brake, car running, passed out.

An officer knocked on the driver’s side window, awakening Brackett, whose “head shot up” and the vehicle engine revved loudly, according to the police report.

OPD gave Brackett commands on turning on his vehicle. Brackett instead activated the windshield wipers and pressed buttons on his radio.

Following getting a warrant approved, police transported Brackett to Capital Medical Center for a blood draw. Following this, he was booked into Olympia Jail for loss of physical control.
