(Consumer) fireworks banned nearly everywhere in county

Scheduled professional fireworks displays are expected to proceed

Sorry, folks. Discharge of all consumer fireworks – including sparklers – is prohibited this year in unincorporated Thurston County as well as in the cities of Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater.

Blame the rain earlier in the month. It fueled vast fields of vegetation that this weekend’s hot temperatures will dry into kindling.

In typical years consumer fireworks are allowed to be discharged during specific hours from June 28 through July 5.

In short, according to Thurston County, “the ban was determined necessary because of weather conditions, high fire danger, and extensive and dry fuel sources.”

According to the county’s press release, “multiple sources, including the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, National Weather Service, Northwest Interagency Coordination Center, and local fire chiefs were engaged on this decision.”

“This decision was made to increase the safety for life and property of residents, and in support of our first responders. We recognize that the national Fourth of July holiday is a celebration of freedom and liberty in the United States, with the discharge of fireworks as an expression of that freedom. However, given the current and projected weather conditions, we believe this is the right call for our community. Please celebrate safely this Independence Day”, says Joshua Cummings, Thurston County Fire Marshal.

Planned professional fireworks exhibits are not covered by the ban and are expected to proceed.

County services information for the Fourth of July weekend:
