After colliding with a parked van, an intoxicated man called 911 dispatch to report the accident himself last Tuesday.
The 2008 Hyundai Tucson that Colton Pruitt, 28, drove had its front-end obliterated after hitting the back of the unoccupied parked 1979 Ford van, which sustained a small amount of damage on May 25 at approximately 5:45 p.m.
An eyewitness decided to stay with Pruitt until Olympia police arrived, telling officers that he initially suspected Pruitt was dazed by the Hyundai’s airbag deployment, but noticed that he was “a little out of sorts.”
The responding police officer noticed that Pruitt was very lethargic, slow to respond to questioning, and his eyes were bloodshot and watery. Pruitt’s speech was also slow and there was an odor of alcohol “emanating from Pruitt’s person.” Pruitt was slow to find his drivers license, insurance and registration, and “seemed confused” enough that officers repeated the request.
When asked to provide consent for a field sobriety test, Pruitt said that he would “fail miserably.” Pruitt said that he had sciatica, which is a nerve disorder that affects hips, buttocks and legs.
Pruitt said that he had only been drinking water and denied consuming any alcohol.
During the preliminary breath test, Pruitt scored a 0.234. During the Draeger breathalyzer while at the Olympia jail, Pruitt scored 0.229 twice.
Pruitt was booked into the Olympia jail for a DUI.
