Emergency blood supply critically low, says health department; donations needed ASAP

Blood banks statewide warn of inadequate supply after pandemic-era donor deficit

Posted

Washington State Department of Health (DOH) reports that blood banks across the state are facing critical shortages of blood and blood products, particularly platelets and types O and Rh negative blood.

DOH said that donations of blood decreased substantially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adding to the challenge, rising rates of influenza, the common cold, and other respiratory diseases discourage people from donating blood.

Blood banks are concerned about their ability to respond adequately during large emergencies or natural disasters, especially for trauma patients, transplant recipients, and cancer patients who depend on these life-saving resources.

A sufficient and reliable supply of blood and blood products, including plasma, is crucial in ensuring the best possible outcomes for those in need.

Blood banks are urging the public to donate blood, which is easy, with appointments that can be scheduled at your convenience and typically take about an hour of your time.

DOH in its press release said to familiarize yourself with eligibility requirements if you're considering donating.
