An allegedly intoxicated man was arrested for driving under the influence while his six-year-old grandson was in the backseat on May 6.

Neil Siereveld, 58, blew a 0.203 on the field sobriety test but refused to provide a breath sample later on at the Lacey Police Department.

Lacey police were dispatched to Siereveld after Siereveld’s vehicle was reported for going slower than traffic near Pacific Ave SE and Carpenter Rd SE at 8:21 p.m. on that Thursday night.

Prior to contacting Siereveld, Lacey police say they followed his vehicle and observed it traveling past the 3000 block of Ruddell Rd SE. They reported observing the vehicle drive over the “turtles” that divide the inside and outside lanes. At the 4500 block of Ruddell Rd SE, Siereveld’s vehicle made an “extremely wide” turn as it entered the oncoming turn lane and “quickly jerked” back to the correct lane, according to the police report.

The police “initiated a traffic stop” at the 5400 block of 45th Ave SE.  Siereveld’s head faced away from the officer standing next to the car with the window rolled up for 15 seconds. When Siereveld looked at the officer, his eyes were observed to be “glossy and bloodshot.”

It was noted in the police report that when Siereveld opens his wallet for ID and proof of insurance, he “stared at the wallet for twenty seconds” then asked the officer “what do you need?”

The Lacey officer noted in the report that the “smell of intoxicants” emitted from Siereveld’s breath and that he was very lethargic in giving his identification. After three requests, Siereveld was able to provide identification and but failed to locate his insurance.

Siereveld told the officer that he had traveled from McAllister Park. Based on the location where his car was first reported, he would have driven a route of some 12 miles to the 5400 block of 45th Ave SE. Siereveld denied consuming alcohol that evening when asked by the officer.

Siereveld’s six-year-old grandson was in the backseat of the vehicle at the time that Siereveld was pulled over.

Siereveld complied with the officer’s request to take field sobriety tests, failing them. After being hearing his Miranda rights “approximately five times,” Siereveld “continued to either change the topic or stated that he did not understand” what was being read to him, the police report said.

Siereveld was booked into Nisqually Jail for driving under the influence and reckless endangerment. The child’s mother, Siereveld’s daughter, arrived to take possession of the vehicle and her child.
