Homeless youth in Lacey now included in recreation scholarship program

Increase in awards and applicants expected in 2023

The Lacey Parks, Culture & Recreation (LCPR) Board updated its existing scholarship program policy to consider better open access for youth experiencing homelessness.

Executive Assistant Sarah Smith said a review of the current program revealed a gap in service around youth who may not have access to a permanent address for applications.

“We reworked the policy and will make some special arrangements to cater [to] the kids who are in that situation (homelessness),” said Smith.

Smith said an increase in awards and applicants should be expected in 2023 as they will also increase advertising efforts for the LCPR Scholarship Program. Previously, marketing for the program has been limited to word-of-mouth or by request.

LCPR Director Jen Burdbidge said the expanded advertising and outreach efforts will be focused on high-density areas.

“We want to make sure we are reaching people,” said Burbidge.

Funding for the 2023-2024 scholarship program so far will come from the Lacey General Fund ($6,678), PARC Foundation of Thurston County Fund ($11,800) and Lacey Parks, Culture & Recreation Fund ($11, 255.63). There will also be $1,107.50 funding for general scholarships and $1,107.50 for youth sports scholarships which will both come from Jim Lutz Memorial Fund.

The Scholarship Program allows LPCR to offer programs and classes to community members who may not have been able to afford to access them.

The program also provides financial assistance to eligible families. According to the LCPR website, qualifying households may request financial assistance of up to $200 for recreation programs every trimester.

Interested community members may visit the LCPR website to submit their application. For assistance with the application or questions, call (360) 491-0857 or email laceyparks@ci.lacey.wa.us.
