State funding for environmental and transportation projects, as well as housing and homelessness services, have emerged as legislative priorities for Olympia in the next session of the Washington Legislature.
The Olympia City Council is scheduled to consider a legislative agenda for the 2027 session at a 6 p.m. meeting at Olympia City Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The proposed agenda outlines the city’s priorities for the legislative session, which is scheduled to begin on Jan. 11 and run for 105 days
A $6.5 million request to support additional housing and help approximately 270 people remaining at "The Jungle" homeless encampment transition into housing is among the priorities. The city is seeking financial support for about 200 housing units to help address the region’s capacity gap and enable the site’s eventual closure.
The city is also supporting a $78.3 million budget request to the Washington State Department of Ecology for the Deschutes Estuary Restroation Project and $14 million for improvements along the Capitol Way/Boulevard corridor.
The corridor project includes land reconfiguration, bicycle facilities, pedestrian enhancements and improved bus stops.
Olympia also plans to advocate for state measures to offset potential revenue losses from the so-called "Millionaires Tax," remove the 2029 sunset on new sales tax categories, and change requirements affecting fire protection contracts for state facilities.
The proposed legislative agenda also calls for continued funding for home electrification rebates and more predictable state climate grants for local governments.
Olympia contracts with Capitol Path Consulting for state lobbying services and plans to coordinate with the 22nd Legislative District delegation and state agencies to advance its priorities.
The city has allocated $52,000 for state lobbying services.
