Local housing, climate, farming nonprofits to open events in May

Posted

Nonprofit organizations throughout Thurston County have prepared activities for May, including events related to housing and nature.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a nonprofit organization is a legally approved purpose or social cause beyond profit generation.

The following nonprofits are inviting interested participants or sponsors to support the upcoming events in the area.

Housing

The YWCA Olympia will hold the Let's Talk: Housing Crisis workshop on Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The talk will cover the current housing crisis, emphasizing on homelessness and accessibility to housing.

“We will explore the initiatives being undertaken by Thurston County and Washington State at an organizational level to address these issues, as well as how individuals can get involved and contribute to the solution,” the organization said in a news release sent to The JOLT News.

There will be a panel with guest speakers to discuss the topic at hand. The panel includes the Thurston County Office of Housing & Homeless Prevention, Thurston County Food Bank, Interfaith Works and Thurston Housing Land Trust.

The talk will be followed by a lunch featuring tacos, rice, and beans from Ramirez Mexican Restaurant and Store in Tumwater.  Event tickets cost $35.

Washington state nonprofit corporation Homes First will also be holding its Real Community Heroes Awards & Celebration to recognize individuals in the county contributing toward addressing the housing crisis and the affected people.

The event is on Friday, May 2, at The Heritage Room in Olympia.

Homes First has a mission to provide affordable, decent housing opportunities for low-income people in Thurston County.

“This grassroots approach focuses on individuals who are working on the ground in our community, creating an uplifting and illuminating cycle of these everyday heroes,” the organization’s website stated.

Event tickets cost $75, which includes refreshments and raffle baskets.

Climate

The Thurston Climate Action Team’s South Sound Action Convention on Saturday, May 17, is an opportunity for the community to discuss the climate planning state and progress in Thurston County.

“It's a time to collaborate on ways we can take action together to ensure a low carbon future and resilience for all, especially our most vulnerable populations,” the Thurston Climate Action Team stated on the event's web page.

There will be a review of the Thurston Climate Mitigation and Resilience Plans.

Plenary speakers include national climate movement leader KC Golden and Washington Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck, who will be replaced by Stew Henderson in case of unavailability.

The cost to attend the event is $50 with lunch and $40 for a partial day without lunch. Scholarships are also available.

 Farming

Keep May 7 free for a benefit for farmland preservation fundraiser event, LOCALvore, by the Community Farm Land Trust.

“LOCALvore showcases the importance of keeping your dollars local. When we invest in local businesses and farms, they give back to our community through charity events, donations, and to nonprofits like the CFLT,” stated the event's web page.

The event is free to attend. Attendees are encouraged to purchase items, meals or drinks from participating local businesses.

A portion of the event proceeds will be used to support farmland preservation in South Puget Sound.

The Community Farm Land Trust is a membership-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving farmland and to keeping it farmed forever.

Interesting that no actual homebuilders are projected to be on the panel for Let's Talk: Housing Crisis.
