A 50-year-old man has been charged with assaulting a woman with a golf club and biting her arm.

On the late night of July 13, Olympia police officers responded to a 911 dispatch of a possible assault in Ramada Inn at 4520 Martin Way E and met with the victim in the lobby.

The victim stated that the suspect, Anthony Chaney, is an acquaintance who offered to let her stay in his room for a few days before her planned departure to Puyallup on July 14.

The report stated that the victim did not know much about the suspect but “but believed he was ok to stay with due to him showing proof of recently getting out of rehab. She also told police that “she is not/has not ever dated/married, had intimate partnership, or been roommates with the suspect.”

According to the victim, before the assault, she was lying on the bed and having a phone conversation with a friend about her situation, when the suspect, interrupted telling her that she could leave and get out. She shared that she replied that she did not want to leave, and that it was a conversation about her situation.

He allegedly got up off the other bed and grabbed a golf club. The police report details that the victim stated that she was “unable to breath” from the golf club being pressed up against her neck and began “kicking and flailing" to get the suspect off of her.

She tried to get away from the suspect who hit her on the back of her head and bit her left arm through her sweater. The suspect then locked the door and told her to go sit down because he was not going to let her leave. He leaning on the door and stayed there.

The room was on the third floor with no additional exits.

She pretended to continue her phone conversation with her friend but had called 911 dispatch. After realizing that the victim was calling 911, the suspect fled from the scene with the golf club. The victim was able to leave the room and go to the lobby and talk to the staff of the inn at that point.

According to the report, he later returned to Ramada Inn and told the staff that his actions were because of her disrespecting him, and that she’d bit her own arm.

When the suspect gave his statement to the police, he accused the victim of disrespecting him after hearing her complain that she doesn’t want to stay in his room but only did so because of financial challenges.

The police later learned that the suspect has three existing Department of Correction (DOC) warrants, two for domestic violence court order violation and a third for assault in the third degree.

The responding police brought the suspect to Thurston County Jail where he was booked for assault in the second and fourth degree and for unlawful imprisonment.

The suspect was later charged with two counts of assault in the second and one count of assault in the fourth degree for inflicting bruises on the victim’s neck, left arm and right foot. He was also charged with unlawful imprisonment for restricting the victim’s movement without consent and legal authority.
