An Olympia man was charged last month after he allegedly shoplifted multiple items from a grocery store and shoved a loss prevention officer.

A Nov. 17 document from the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney indicated that Joseph Labranche Schierbeck, 32, was charged with second-degree robbery.

According to Lacey police, Schierbeck was arrested on Nov. 14 after a reported assault and shoplifting incident at the Walmart on Galaxy Drive in Lacey.

A responding police officer said Schierbeck was pinned to the ground by three men who stepped in after seeing a Walmart employee shoved by the suspect.

Authorities said security camera footage showed Schierbeck pushing a shopping cart full of items toward the exit. Items included two hatchets, two machetes, two books, A-shirts, socks and other items with a value totaling $347 plus sales tax.

The loss-prevention officer was then seen attempting to talk to Schierbeck, who appeared to ignore him.

Police said the employee could be seen grabbing onto the side of the shopping cart in an attempt to stop or slow it down, but Schierbeck responded by trying to run out of the store.

The suspect and the employee were then seen exiting the store at the same time, causing Schierbeck and the shopping cart to fall over.

Police reported the footage showed Schierbeck getting up, picking up the items from the ground, and shoving the loss prevention officer.

The employee told police that he hurt his thumb and back from being pushed down.

Schierbeck was booked at the Thurston County Jail for second-degree robbery, a felony.
