Olympia Transit Center improvements will add accessibility and reduce trip hazards

Pedestrian improvements are planned for the Olympia Transit Center at the northwest corner of the property, which will add accessibility and reduce trip hazards, among other goals.

Intercity Transit’s (IT) board of directors authorized Interim General Manager Emily Bergkamp on Wednesday, August 16, to execute a contract with NPM Construction Co. to construct the improvements for $384,661.

Procurement Coordinator Tammy Ferris told the board that the project would reduce trip hazards and enhance accessibility at the site. The project includes the replacement of the sidewalk, curbs, accessibility ramps, the pavers at the loading platform and crossings, as well as the repainting of pavement markings.

IT would coordinate with NPM Construction so that the construction of these improvements causes minimal impact on IT’s operations.

NPM Construction’s bid, which was 6% above the estimated cost of IT engineers, was deemed the “lowest, responsive, and responsible bid” among five bidders. The bids ranged from the highest at $457,457 to the lowest at $349,692.

SCJ Alliance, IT’s on-call architectural and engineering services provider, designed the site improvements, which are the final phase of a series of projects to update public areas on the site. IT completed similar improvements at the southwest portion of the property to complement a customer service building that was constructed in 2019.

IT extends existing janitorial contract

IT’s board of directors also authorized Bergkamp to sign a contract renewal with CW Janitorial Service to provide IT facilities with janitorial services and supplies for the amount of $553,589.

The renewal is the fourth and final one-year extension as provided in CW’s original contract in August 2019 and takes effect on September 1.

It's about time! It should have been embarrassing how inaccessible the curb ramps were after SEVERAL people in powerchairs have fallen on them, injuring themselves. At least they MIGHT have the plans in place soon enough to avoid a major ADA lawsuit that SHOULD have been filed years ago!
