Olympia wants 13 to 21 year old volunteers to help create city youth council

Olympia is seeking young community members to help it develop a youth council that it plans to create to involve the youth with local government.

“We’re looking for the voices of Olympia youths representing all parts of our community,” the city said on a Facebook post, “all identities, all backgrounds and all cultures.”

According to the city’s website, the city is looking for 13- to 21-year-old Olympia residents who can apply to be either an Olympia Workgroup Adviser or panelist who will help develop the process and structure of a youth council which will be forwarded to the city council for approval.

“We are seeking a diverse workgroup membership for those who will inform the final recommendations taken to the city council,” the city said, justifying questions about race, gender, social class and other questions it has on its application form.

Workgroup members may be asked to attend virtual workgroups and give a youth’s take on what would be needed for an Olympia Youth Council should be. Applicants who are not chosen to be workgroup members will be asked to become workgroup panelists.

Workgroup members will be given a $200 Visa gift card once their participation is complete, as well as entered into a raffle for prizes.

“No youth will be turned away unless parental/guardian consent isn't achieved,” the city said.

Interested community members may apply here until Monday, April 10.
