Olympia School District Superintendent Patrick Murphy encourages the community to complete an online survey about the balanced calendar concept.
“We want to know what our community thinks about the balanced calendar,” Murphy said during the OSD regular board meeting Thursday, April 28.
“I encourage you to look at those things before filling out the survey.”
Murphy said the survey has videos that provide more information about a balanced calendar.
The OSD board has started this year's discussions of shifting to a balanced calendar to modify the traditional 180-day school calendar to keep the learning process continuous.
The OSD website further explains that students would have more periodic, longer breaks throughout the school year and a shorter summer break in the balanced calendar.
“Students attending schools that follow a balanced calendar receive the same number of instructional days and hours as those who attend schools that follow a traditional calendar,” the website states.
According to Murphy, the survey will determine the next steps of whether or not the school district to formally investigate more on a balanced calendar for the Olympia School District.
The deadline to complete the survey is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 20. Click here to participate.
