'Procession of the Species' Celebration

Posted

Have you ever attended the "Procession of the Species Celebration?" It’s a parade that celebrates the natural world with music, art, and movement in downtown Olympia.

You can be a participant or a spectator. In its 30th year, it shines now more than ever. Whether you are a little kid, a teen, an adult, or an octopus — there is a place for you at the procession.

In 2024, it won first prize in South Sound and Washington state from the Washington Festivals and Events Organization.

This year’s celebration is quickly coming to life! You can learn all about it, thanks in part to the Port of Olympia, which funded a grant request for a new website.

“Look there for all the information you need, plus spectacular, joyful photos from over the years,” urges Director Eli Sterling.

In a nutshell:

  • Now through April 12 are workshops where you can learn how to make luminaries, masks, bucket drums, batik and more!
  • Wednesdays through Sundays until the procession are studio times. You can create your vision in the studio space provided at the Armory.
  • Saturday, March 29 is the Global Studio Dance Party with Pumphouse, Amira Belly Dance Troupe  and more! 7:30-11 p.m., $10. This is a chance to tour the community art studio at the Olympia Armory Creative Campus.
  • Friday, April 25, in the evening is the Luminary Procession
  • Saturday, April 26, in the late afternoon and early evening is the Procession of the Species

Note: The workshops, studios, and dance party are all held at Armory Creative Campus 515 Eastside St. SE Olympia.

Created by the community for the community, the Procession of the Species Celebration embraces art, music and dance to inspire learning, appreciation and protection of the natural world.

The sponsors include the City of Olympia Armory, City of Olympia LTAC, LOTT, Inspire Olympia, Nisqually Indian Tribe, Port of Olympia, Raven's Brew Coffee, Squaxin Island Tribe, Thurston County LTAC and Community Foundation of South Puget Sound.

YES. We LOVE the Procession of the Species. It's so Oly. It's so US.

Several years ago, I was standing on the sidewalk watching the Procession. A woman...very well dressed, found a spot next to me and said, "What is going on here? We're from Florida." I explained what it was, but I dont' think she was listening, because at that moment, a blue tiger walked past.

"That's a grown man!" she said.

    "Right!"

    "He's a grown up!"

    "Okay........."

"They're dressed up like animals? What is that woman supposed to be?"

    I said, "I think she's a dung beetle."

"That's disgusting! Good god, what is this? These aren't children, these are grown ups dressed as animals? Are they insane?"

"No,", I said, 'it's what we do here. It doesn't matter how old you are, anyone can march in whatever costume they want."

She looked at me and said "You West Coast people are so strange."

    I said, 'Thank you!!!"
