The Puget Sound Estuarium will host a free Zoom webinar on Thursday, January 4, with a guest speaker from Wolf Haven sanctuary in Tenino.

This series will educate participants about the triumphs and challenges facing wild and sanctuary wolves and wolfdogs. It will highlight current research about this federally endangered canine and the many conservation and habitat restoration efforts of scientists, educators, artists, and wildlife advocates who love them. Participants will also have a chance to ask questions live.

“Tune in on January 4 at 6:30 p.m. as we hear howls and learn about wolves from Danielle Ransier, Education and Outreach Specialist at Wolf Haven International. If you are interested in learning about these captivating canines, this is a talk you’ll want to dig into!” reads the Estuarium’s press release.

Since 1982, nonprofit Wolf Haven International has rescued and provided secluded ecologically appropriate lifetime sanctuary to over 300 neglected, abused, or displaced wolves and wolfdogs and has been able to re-release 3 sanctuary-born wolf packs and some individual wolves back into the wild. The majority of their wolves, though, have been rescued from private ownership and will remain in the sanctuary for life.

Wolf Haven’s mission is to “conserve and protect wolves and their habitat” and to enhance public understanding of this important native keystone predator, which includes dispelling myths such as the popular misconception that wolves and wolfdogs are suitable pets. Wolf Haven also aims to improve environmental literacy among the public, recognizing on their website that science-based wolf research and education “empowers wolf supporters to speak out for wolves with their legislators.”

Residents of Western Washington can help support these special animals and promote native ecosystem restoration through Wolf Haven’s many events, resources and programs; improved understanding and appreciation of wolves among the public empowers us to advocate for them effectively.

Kids, parents, and coloring enthusiasts can access the free downloadable coloring page from the Estuarium’s Discovery Speaker Series web page. Coloring pages can also be picked up at the Estuarium on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
