Record-breaking freezing temperatures over weekend

Frozen fountains and burst pipes

Posted

Over the weekend, record-breaking freezing temperatures came to Thurston County and the rest of Western Washington.

Temperatures dropped to 11 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday and a low of seventeen degrees on Saturday.

At the Capitol Campus, the frozen water of the fountain was photographed, showing the water cascades frozen.

According to the Tumwater Fire Department, many jurisdictions received “emergency services calls related to frozen pipes and water leaks -- both residential and commercial.”

Lacey Fire Department shared on its Facebook page that the “thaw” has begun. At the time of the post, the department had “responded to 8 frozen pipes/water leaks in the last hour.”

Both jurisdictions urged people to learn where their water shutoff valve is and to turn it off to avoid further damage from leaks that may arise from pipes that were damaged in the freeze.
