Fire Safety Burn Ban still in effect for Thurston County, expected until September 29

A red flag warning has been issued by the National Weather Service due to dry and unstable conditions with expected gusty wind and a Friday thunderstorm that is expected from 11 a.m. Thursday through 5 p.m. Friday.

“Please do your part and follow all fire safety guidelines and local ordinances!” the US National Weather Service Seattle Washington social media post said.

The area has a high potential for large fire growth, and that would lead to air quality problems.

The affected area is Weather Zone 659, which comes right up to Thurston County and into Mason and Pierce Counties. The affected areas are generally above 1500 feet of the West slope of the Central Cascades.

Easterly winds of speed between 10 to 15 mph may create even lower humidity and potentially the wind speeds can become erratic.

Friday is forecasted to have the potential for thunderstorms in the morning, bringing the risk of lightning strike with it.

Thurston County initiated a Fire Safety Burn Ban on July 5, meaning outdoor burning is restricted to reduce brush fires and property damage.

Thurston County’s website stated, “The Fire Safety Burn Ban applies to residential yard waste burning and all land clearing burns. The restrictions on outdoor burning during the summer have resulted in a significant drop in brush fires and property damage each of the past several years, according to fire officials.”
