An allegedly intoxicated man was discovered by witnesses, passed out behind the wheel of his running vehicle, while slumped over the passenger side, early last Friday, July 16.

Two eyewitnesses first noticed Eric Starry, 30, slumped over on the passenger side of his running vehicle at about 11:15 p.m. last Thursday.  The witnesses told police that the car’s windshield wipers were on and hazard lights activated.

The witnesses noticed Starry’s car again after they finished working at 1:20 a.m., approximately two hours later, and called 911.

Olympia Police responded and found Starry standing near his vehicle, which was parked in a legal parking space on Union Ave SE at the corner of  Capitol Way S, across from the Helen Sommers Building. The Helen Sommers Building houses the Washington State Patrol.

Olympia police arrived to find Eric Starry, 30, standing next to his open car door, looking around in a nearby parking stall. Starry’s speech was repetitive and slurred, his eyes watery and bloodshot.

After conducting a voluntary field sobriety test, OPD arrested Starry.

After getting a search warrant for a blood draw, at approximately 3:48 a.m., police transported Starry to Capital Medical Center. There, Starry admitted to taking methamphetamine but that his usual drug of choice was heroin.

Starry was booked into the Olympia Jail for lack of physical control of his vehicle.
