The Olympia School District reported no noteworthy increases in the number of enrolled students for the start of the school year 2022-2023 during its regular hybrid session on September 8.
“The district has budgeted an annual average full-time equivalent student population of 8,985 students,” Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Priddy shared. “As of this afternoon, we have this exact number of students enrolled.”
“However, this is only the second day of school, and we know that our data is far too preliminary to rest on that,” clarified Priddy.
Director Scott Clifthorne asked whether the office has at least seen the number increasing significantly in the recent history between the first day of school and six weeks out.
“The keyword there is significant. We typically see an increase between the September count date and the October court date, but it is typically very modest; it would be understood that we are still in a strange period of time,” Priddy answered.
Career and Technical Education
Meanwhile, the board lauded the integration of Career and Technical Education (CTE) into the curriculum of middle school and high school students.
“What does CTE bring to our kids? We want to talk about all the dual credit opportunities for kids where students are given the opportunity to learn or earn college credits through CTE classes,” Director of Career & College Readiness Paula Perryman said, “they can earn classes through partnerships with community colleges, and those are industry-recognized credentials.”
However, Perryman also noted some discrepancies in the data regarding how many kids are enrolled in CTE and whether that number meets the population of the building they’re in regarding specialty populations– gender, race and ethnicity, and special programs.
“The goal is to take this, evaluate and say where are we falling short in meeting kids' needs or even reaching out to them so that the partnerships are going to play into this as we are going to begin to look at these places where the over-under is,” Perryman added.
According to the report, the CTE is expected to have an expansion and diversification of programs of study, graduation pathways, and dual credit in the following years to come.
Currently, the following list contains the available programs per school that students in the district have or are currently enrolled in.
