The Thurston Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has taken a significant step in recognizing and celebrating the contributions of women throughout history by officially proclaiming March as Women's History Month.

Representatives from the Thurston League of Women Voters and former Thurston County Commissioner, including Karen Fraser, received the proclamation during the board’s meeting on March 5.

The proclamation acknowledges the indispensable role women have played in the growth and strength of the community. It highlights the diverse contributions of women from all backgrounds to various spheres, including the economy, culture, arts, social advancement, and beyond.

“Women of every race, class, and ethnic background have made and continue to make historic contributions to the growth and strength of Thurston County, the State of Washington, our nation, and the global community,” the proclamation read.

Furthermore, the proclamation underscores American women's unique role, particularly in volunteering, establishing charitable institutions, and serving in public office and the military. It aligns with the national recognition of March as National Women's History Month, a tradition dating back to 1987, derived from International Women’s Day.

The theme for National Women's History Month in 2024, "Women who advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion," and is emphasized in the proclamation.

In light of this proclamation, the Board of Thurston County Commissioners urges all citizens to take this opportunity to honor and appreciate the countless contributions of women to the community and the nation.
