Thurston, Olympia to acquire $1.685M Franz Anderson Road property to house homeless

The Thurston Board of County Commissioners approved the interlocal agreement with Olympia to acquire and develop a property in Franz Anderson Road to shelter homeless individuals.

During its meeting today, Tom Webster, Manager of Housing and Homeless Prevention, said the interlocal agreement (ILA) with Olympia includes creating a safe parking lot for RVs that will eventually be developed into permanent housing.

The county and city will equally share the cost of acquisition and the eventual development of the site.

Webster said the Regional Housing Council would handle the long-term maintenance and development of the housing property.

The County’s funding for this ILA will come from the grant under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

The Franz-Anderson Road property is divided into three lots and spans 5.88 acres.

In January, Olympia’s Assistant City Manager Keith Stahley assured the public that the onsite professional case management and site management team would monitor and manage the site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Last year, several residents spoke against the plan because of public safety concerns since the location sits near a school and single-family homes.

Business and property owners from the adjacent Stoll Road also expressed their concern because of the possibility of devaluation for neighboring properties.
