Tumwater will have a soft launch of its online open house on October 17 to update community members on various regulations on trees and vegetation, announced Project consultant Amber Mikluscak during a joint meeting between the planning commission and the tree board yesterday, October 11.

The online open house is part of the city’s public engagement plan to acquire input as they prepare a Street Tree Plan and update its street tree regulations under TMC 12.24 and landscaping regulations under TMC 18.47

Public outreach is significant to this process to ensure that the regulatory updates are “grounded in equity, inclusion, and environmental justice,” a document containing the city’s public engagement plan stated. Part of their public outreach strategy is to acquire feedback from different demographic groups, such as working families with school-aged children, people from diverse communities, and long-term residents.

Tumwater also plans to use the online open house as the main source of information for the project’s duration. Mikluscak said users may visit the online open house to register for stakeholder meetings, submit open forum feedback, or sign up for newsletters. It will also contain all the documents and updates to the various initiatives.

As part of its public engagement plan, the city also plans to distribute posters and postcards as well as use social media for information dissemination.

The city is working on these regulatory updates with its consultant, The Watershed Company. All of the amendments they are seeking to make are part of the city’s Urban Forestry Management Plan (UFMP), which Tumwater adopted on March 2, 2021.
